The inspiration
In my early twenties, I spent several heady years living in New York. Years later, a few weeks after the events of 9/11, I returned to a much-altered Manhattan. On that trip, I took my children to Ground Zero: cordoned off, smoke and ash still swirling – and we cried as we read the heart wrenching notices about lost loved ones, pinned to the wire fencing.
In 2017, I paid my respects at the Memorial, and was once again overwhelmed by sadness at the enormity of the disaster, and awed at the bravery of the victims and first responders. But mostly I was struck by how many lives still remained touched by the lasting impact of that terrible morning, and whilst brooding on the nature of love, loss and disbelief, I stumbled on the central premise for A Voice In The Night..
